I am having..... and it's not made of sugar and spice...

Some exciting news!!!!!!!!!!

I went to the dr. on Thursday for a regular 16week check up and after my appt. the nurse who is truly the sweetest nurse I've ever had, told me she could get me into ultrasound for a few minutes to find out the sex of the bambino....If I wanted!  I wasn't supposed to find out until Nov. 24th, but of course I jumped at the chance to find out early!  It was a male tech. and I don't know if any of you have experienced a male ultrasound tech. but they are well..... blunt and non emotional (ok so the two I've had). The guy places the thing on my belly and goes, "it's a boy." Totally blunt and way to fast! I was got off gaurd and was like, "uhh, are you sure? can you double check?!!!!?" cause you have to know I was over 100% sure it was a girl!  And to be entirely honest, I hoped it was a girl. Well he double checked, for my sake and the little guy wasn't being shy.... it was quite obvious. You can't really mistake a boy!!  And then..... I cried. Isn't that pathetic? I was mostly shocked, but I really thought it was a girl and secretly hoped it was because under the circumstances it would have been nice to have one of each. And the only name we had talked about was a girls name, Peyton. I know it's a guys name too, but I had dreamed it to be a girls name.  I don't have any ideas about boy names, so I'm open to suggestions! I have had about 5 people suggest Micah, which means 'Who is like God.'  I want to use Preston for a middle name and no names go with Preston. But you know, I think I have a few months to figure it out!
I know and trust that God has his hand entirely in even this, he is such a great God and knows far better than me what we'll need. And you know, surprise, surprise, this isn't all about me! ha! It is so easy to be so self centered.  Jacob might really need a brother and friend growing up. Now I don't have to ever worry about having a little girl who doesn't have her daddy to walk her down the aisle - (ya I do think that far ahead). I'll have two boys to protect me and people tell me boys are easier than girls, it's been true with Jake - and if I had a girl like me then they are definitely right!  I can't wait to see Jake interact with his baby bro. I am starting to get excited, my mom bought him this adorable outfit to come home from the hospital in! And I'm redecorating the "boys" room!!  It will be wonderful and I know as soon as I meet this little one I will become lost in my precious gift from the Lord.

Congratulations, Tara! My name is Joy, and my husband Seth and I are good friends with Preston's cousin, Ryan and Brooke Ceola. We heard your story through them, and I have been praying for you and crying with you through your blog. I would first like you to know what a witness you have been to me personally. Losing my husband has always been my greatest fear, and I think God is really using your precious heart to speak to people like me and let us know that He WILL give us the strength to live - and not only live but live joyfully, if ever a time of loss should come - I have been quite in awe of your response in all this. Please know that I am continuing to pray for you - in all your stages of grief that you are encountering and will encounter in the future - that God would continue to protect your heart and sustain you - and give you great strength in the rest of your pregnancy and during the delivery of your new baby boy! And in all your days to come...

Onto baby boy #2... we just had our second baby boy as well - our first is 2-and-a-half. I was really really hoping for a girl this time as well - and was also 100% sure it was one :) It's so funny that we do that to ourselves! Anyway, our little guy wasn't shy either, so we quickly found out he was another boy at our ultrasound. I was shocked and had a slight wave of disappointment but quickly moved on to joy for another healthy baby. (I've always desperately wanted a girl and could so easily envision us with a girl...) After now having 2 wonderful boys, I can't imagine it any other way! I'd heard other people say the same thing, but it really is true. My new little guy is so incredibly sweet - as your new one will be. It's so neat to be a mother for the second time, because all your motherly instincts kick in immediately when this little one is born, and it's so much easier to enjoy all the newborn stages that we worried about the first time cause we didn't know if it was normal or not! Most of those worries from the first time don't really exist the second time, and you just love, love, love that baby. Oh and on a side note, we have a niece named Payton, and yes, it is a cute girls name! And I think lots of great names will go with Preston...I love that you are doing that - such a sweet legacy to your husband. And I do love that you will have 2 boys to protect you :) Boys are sweet and they love their Mama's :) Congratulations again!

Okay, now that I have talked your ear off, and you have no idea who I am :), I'll end this comment. Your precious family has touched my heart - I am praising God for His faithfulness in you and your continued faithfulness to him.

Love, Joy

That's fantastic, Tara! Boys ARE MUCH easier than girls ... take my word for it :) And you know that no matter what it is, you're gonna thoroughly enjoy him!

I know you'll get a lot of names in the coming months, but I thought Samuel Preston Newby has a nice ring to it, since you're going to honor Preston in that way. (Couldn't do that with a girl, really ..)

Congrats Tara. Glad to see you in good spirits. This world has valleys and mountain tops. Enjoy the mountian tops while you're there. You just persevered through a deep valley. Praise God for His faithfulness and love for His children!

Psalm 71:14 But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more.

Congrats on a second boy!! Jacob will love having a brother!
Okay, so you said that there aren't any names that go with Preston but you're wrong. I think that a one syllable name would go perfect with Preston.
Some examples:
Gage Preston
Bryce Preston
Seth Preston
Cole Preston
Dane Preston
Kai Preston
Max Preston
Jace Preston
Reese Preston
Joel Preston
Ian Preston
Chase Preston

See, there's a balance between syllables so it flows good together. Okay, so far, I like Kai Preston, Chase Preston, Ian Preston, and Joel Preston.

I think it's so fun to choose a name so I'll keep thinking of possibilities!

I personally think Micah Preston sounds very nice. :) I don't know you, but I've been praying for you. I grew up attending Lake, and loved and served under 3 youth pastors there back in the day. :) I then attended Multnomah (19 years ago!), and I heard about the terrible accident from a friend who is living in the Multnomah dorm and knows Preston's sis. I just wanted you to know I am so touched by your faith and love for God, and I will continue to pray. :)

You have quite the following now:) I remember you would joke about how you had "so many" people reading your blog. I would step in with "Me, me! I do! I do read it!" I loved it then and I still love it now. It's exciting to see you have an impact on so many people.
What was the ultrasound tech's reaction when you started crying?! I wonder how he came about to pick that occupation. hummm... Anyways:)... my mind wonders.
Thanks for the update! Any ideas on decorating? Do you like Ikea? I know they just opened one up Portland a few years ago and then there is one in Seattle and up in BC. I like me some Ikea!!
Take care friend:) You've been in my prayers.

lol ... Hi Tara, just me again (the www is probably the only way we'll ever get in touch anyways) ... I didn't realize that this could become such a big "Name Game" and I was going to toss in Josiah's name, but someone beat me to it ;) We choose Josiah for our son because the mean really meant a lot to us: The Lord supports/the Lord heals (we've found both meanings) ... little did we know ... but God did! [phew]

toodles friend. sending you a big brother hug your way.

Hi Tara,

You don't know me, but I've been following & praying for you for a while. This name thing is too irresistible to continue to lurk. Our son was a wonderful surprise (we were told we couldn't have any) - and his middle name (long story as to why not the first) is "Macrae" - which means "son of grace". And it is truly God's grace.

Just a thought...

maybe you should just go with the simple name of Sponge Bob Preston Newby...I really think Preston would approve of that and be honored to have a son with that name!hehe!

Hello Tara, I came across your blog from my friend Heather who knew you in college. She wrote about you and your strong faith and I wanted to check it out. What strong faith you do have, and how inspiring! I am doing a Bible Study right now by Beth Moore "Believing God". You have struck such a cord in my heart and I will be keeping you in my prayers as you continue to grieve and also for all the exciting times you will encounter in your life in the coming days. I as well have 2 boys, one is almost 5 and my 2nd is 2. I too wanted a girl badly the 2nd time and had a moment of disappointment. But as you say God has everything planned, and he has a special plan for your two boys. Also, what a great way to honor your husbands namesake with this new life growing inside you!
May God give you the strength you need when you need it, and I look forward to hearing the blessed birth of your baby boy!
God Bless,
Your sister in Christ

Hi there Tara. I saw your story on Heather's site and thought I would drop over and say hi. I have been thinking of baby names myself - for my sister who is pregnant. I hope you don't mind me suggesting these, knowing all you have been going through. Blessings!

Jeremiah Newby (God will raise up)
Noah Newby (Comfort)
Ethan Newby (Strong)
Ezekiel Newby (God will strengthen)

Take care, Tammy

I am so happy for you Tara! My name is Rowanne and I go to church at Grace Community covenant, where I am a member of teh youth group. I am a junior in high school, and I am close friends with Claudia Fischer and Tyler Krumland. I heard of the accident right after it happened and have been praying for you and reading your blog to keep a constant update on how you have been doing, and i praise God that for Preston's faith and taht he is "dancing with Jesus" right now. And I am so happy about the news of your new child! Even though he is not a girl, he will bring such joy to your life.

You have been such an example of strength for me, and I praise God for your solid faith and that He has been with you through this tragic time. The story of your husband's death continues to astound me. A week before school started my dad had a massive heart attack, and was dead for three minuets before they brought him back. He has never had any health problems before and is extrememly fit and healthy, so this came as a complete shock. He is completely better now, and it is as if nothing ever happened. It is truly by the grace of God that he is still here with us, and I praise Him everyday for how He has carried us throught those trying few days. He has a plan through my dad's accident, a plan that only He fully understands the granduer of. I saw Him at work in the accident involving your husband, and I am truly convinced that His ways are mysterious and unfathomable, but magnificent and completely good as well. I am awed by you and teh strenght and peace you have displayed over the past few weeks in thd face in such tragedy, because I know that if my dad had died I would not have been able to be the strenght that I needed to be for my brothers and my mom.

I will continue to keep you and Jackob in my prayers, and I pray that this pregnancy will be an easy one for you, and that God's love and joy would pour over you and be evidnt to you in all things.

God bless,
Rowanne
